Environmental Policy
At Harbour Lights we are committed to providing high quality accommodation and service, whilst minimising the environmental impact of all of our activities and purchases.
With that aim, we have been inspected through the Green Tourism Business Scheme, to help us ensure that our environmental principles are lived out in our actions. We expect our grading to be issued early in September.
Some of the main actions we are already taking to reduce our environmental impact are:
Reduction of energy usage
-
Electricity purchased on ‘green’ tariff from Good Energy, using 100% renewable energy
-
High levels of insulation in the building
-
Use of energy saving light bulbs
-
Purchase of high energy efficiency appliances
-
Policy for switching off lights and ‘stand by’ on TVs etc.
-
Energy saving strategy for laundry of towels and sheets
Minimisation of waste
-
Comprehensive re-cycling strategy
-
Dual flush WCs to minimise water usage
-
Providing showers rather than baths to save water
-
Carrier bags replaced by re-usable bags
Local purchasing, fair trade, organic and use of home made products
-
We purchase as much locally as we can e.g. local sausage, bacon, fish and flour
-
We support our local shops as much as we can
-
We are committed to organic produce whenever possible e.g. eggs (free range), milk, butter
-
Fair trade products are used as much as possible e.g. tea and coffee
-
Our breakfast menu features many home made items e.g. bread, cereal, yoghurt – all made from the finest, natural ingredients
‘Earth friendly’ cleaning strategies
-
The use of ‘E Cloths’ to minimise the use of chemicals
-
The use in cleaning of bicarbonate of soda and vinegar in water to replace aggressive chemical products
-
The use of environmentally friendly cleaning products such as Ecover laundry, dishwasher and washing up products
-
The use of ‘natural’ shampoo, conditioner and shower gel from Faith in Nature
Wildlife and landscape
-
Our garden is a haven for wildlife in the centre of Craster
-
We feed the birds and help support a diverse rnage of bird species
-
The garden has areas of natural planting to encourage wildlife
-
We are member of the RSPB and Northumberland Wildlife Trust
